“Trump Revives Threats to Withhold Disaster Aid for Political Foes”
"The deadly Los Angeles area wildfires were turned into a political conflagration on Wednesday as President-elect Donald Trump rekindled past threats to withhold disaster aid to Democratic opponents in California.
It came as howling Santa Ana winds pushed flames through palm-studded neighborhoods in explosive bursts that left more than 1,000 homes, businesses and schools in chars, with no end in sight as firefighters in some areas struggled to find enough water to combat the surging flames. At least five people had died as of Wednesday night.
Trump put the blame on President Joe Biden and Gov. Gavin Newsom in a broad political attack aimed at everything from environmental protections for delta smelt — which Trump described Wednesday as a "useless fish" to Biden’s handling of disaster aid. It could be a preview of his second term, during which Trump has pledged to withhold wildfire aid from California unless Newsom gives in to his policy demands."

During the worst parts of the COVID-19 pandemic Trump was slow to send aid to blue states.
When there were fires in Northern California Trump said that forests should be cleared of all brush as they do in Norway (or other Scandinavian nation). He talked about "sweeping the forest floor."
Now he says that these fires are raging out of control because DEI hiring has resulted in an incompetent force of first responders. Although this is not an exact quote, it is what he, and other Republicans who echoed his sentiments, meant.
He accused Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, of valuing a "useless fish" over humans. He intimated that making sure the fish had enough water was the cause of hydrants without water, although there is no proof that this is what happened.
Since Republicans continue to deny that climate change is the result of human actions and that climate changes might be slowed by using the carbon-cutting approaches that scientists have designed, Republican attitudes are likely to give free rein to more natural disasters.
Trump is trying to force California to back his priorities and policies, a "transaction" that will win his good will. If Newsom bends to Trump's will, then Trump will see what can be done about federal aid.
I hope that some of you will read the book I wrote about Trump's threats against blue states that will not accept Trump's views about everything. It's a fiction book starring Donald Trump, who has won subsequent elections and has imposed his will (and the will of Evangelicals) on most of the US. It is easy to read because "Trump loves the poorly educated." It names Trump because he is a public figure and it takes place in the future.
I taught reading to adults for years and learned that many Americans graduate from high school with reading levels between 6th and 9th grade. The book is written as a YA science fiction book, intended to make people think about what Trump's America might look like.
No one read it, except in Japan but it might still give Americans who love Trump a dose of reality about what his America might look like.
