NY District 22 encompasses the old District 24 and focuses on mostly rural Madison County rather than Onondaga County which includes the city of Syracuse. The population of Syracuse has been decreasing but, from my perspective as a voter, the new district has not been redrawn correctly, and this has driven representation in Syracuse to the extreme right. In 2020, the elections of a millionaire from rural Madison County, a MAGA Republican who believes "the Big Lie," reflects the rural/urban divide encouraged by the Republican Party, addressing real or imagined grievances which contend that cities get all the government goodies because they have more people and that our farmers and smaller towns get ignored.
In a nation that uses voting to decide who represents us it makes sense that areas with greater numbers of people get to determine which party goes to Congress. Representatives are expected to treat all the people in their districts as equals. In these days of hyper partisan politics representatives, once elected, feel they have a mandate to act in Congress according to their ideology, which can be quite extreme. If the current Republican elected in NY22 believes that small government is necessary, wants to either cut income taxes on the wealthy or get rid of income taxes altogether, then the programs citizens need will get no backing from the representative (Brandon Williams). We are not talking here about balancing budgets or trimming expenses. We are talking about an end to spending the people's money on things people need (which is not socialism), or we are talking about a government that in powerless because it is not funded. Williams also would like to see an abortion ban in New York State, and a national abortion ban.
Sarah Klee Hood is focusing on the needs of moms in her campaign. She expects women to have control over their own health, both reproductive and otherwise. She wants to fight for better funding for childcare and family leave and other budget expenditures that will help moms and working families. From the information in the bio on her website, she will be able to work on any project that presents as a priority if we send her to Washington. She has poise and is a good speaker.
Democrats have not done well in the old NY24 or the new NY22. People with power in the district consider themselves conservatives and they don't care that this is not their father's Republican Party. Democrats insist that they can beat this trend with only grassroots funding. However, until Citizens United is overturned, or Republicans agree to use only grassroots funding also, Democrats may be doomed unless they are willing to use PAC and super PAC dollars for the kinds of slick advertising that even local Democratic candidates have to compete with from the Republicans.
